About Kalaa Kaumudi

Founded by artiste Saipriya Viswanathan in the year 2008, Kalaa Kaumudi is an unique institution catering to all the three apsects of South Indian classical music, namely, Geetam (vocal music), Vadyam (Instrumental music) and Nrithyam (dance).

Saipriya Viswanathan started studying Carnatic vocal music and Bharata Natyam from the tender age of five. Having performed regularly for many years, she then decided to enhance her knowledge of music by pursuing the study of Instrumental music. She was trained in Carnatic Veena by her Guru, late Smt. Mangalam Muthuswamy.

Saipriya has now completely dedicated herself to the study of Carnatic music, Carnatic Veena and Bharata Natyam. Completing a diploma course in Carnatic Vocal music from the University of Mumbai has helped her develop a better understanding of music, thereby enabling her to compose songs for dance numbers as well. Saipriya believes that being creative helps people live a life rich with joy and fulfilment. To Saipriya, her art is not only a means of self-expression - it is life itself!

Saipriya is a teacher of both Indian Classical Dance and Music. Her motto is "Art for Art's sake". She is a pure traditionalist and her future aspiration is to open an Institute dedicated to the service of art. At present, she runs a Classical Performing Arts Institute by the name of “KALAA KAUMUDI”. She hopes to further her own knowledge in music and dance by imparting training in the same to her students. As the old adage goes, 'TEACHING IS THE BEST FORM OF LEARNING'!
